"I paint with light. The sculpture simply agrees to hold still long enough for the light to finish the thought." Maxwell Alexander, MA(FIT)/BFA(SVA), Artist/Activist, Designer, Photographer & Wellness Coach

About the Piece

Window to the Universe VII — Gold is a museum quality canvas print from Maxwell Alexander's Window to the Universe series, a body of fine art still life photography built entirely around his own original gypsum sculptures. Each form begins as a hand-built sculptural study — cast, carved, and finished by Alexander himself — before it is photographed under controlled studio light. The gold leaf interior is not a digital effect. It lives inside the original sculpture, and the photograph exists purely to record what happens when light enters a form built to hold it.

The series takes its name from its central idea: that every sculptural void is a window, and every window looks out on something larger than the room it hangs in. Where Alexander's nature photography draws its calm from landscape, and his figurative work draws its weight from the human form, Window to the Universe draws its power from pure geometry — the sphere, the hollow, the curve of interior space catching light. It is the most architectural and the most meditative of his three registers, which is exactly why it has found such a natural home in wellness and healing interior design.

"Gold is what courage looks like when you finally look inside the void and find light already waiting there." — Maxwell Alexander

Why This Series Belongs in Wellness and Healing Interiors

A room with a single strong visual anchor — rather than clutter, pattern, or busy imagery — invites people to slow down and stay a while longer. Window to the Universe was built for exactly that function. The sculptural stillness of the form, the restraint of white and gold against a soft studio background, and the total absence of visual noise make it one of the few genuinely meditative options available in fine art photography today — a piece designed to be looked at slowly, not glanced past.

This is the same design logic already integrated into Alexander's work with Aláry Health Spa, where his photography has been used to build out a healing interior program centered on nervous system regulation, longevity, and post-treatment calm. Window to the Universe extends that same philosophy into a wider set of environments:

  • Boutique hotels and resorts — lobby installations, spa corridors, and suite art programs where a single sculptural image needs to hold a large wall without competing with architecture, marble, or brass finishes
  • Medical offices, medical spas, and wellness clinics — waiting rooms, treatment suites, infusion and recovery spaces, and consultation rooms, where calming, form-forward imagery shapes how a space is perceived before a single word is spoken
  • Hospitals and healthcare systems — corridors, patient rooms, and family waiting areas increasingly incorporating art programs chosen for their effect on patient comfort and wellbeing
  • Corporate and executive interiors — reception areas and private offices seeking a collector-grade fine art piece with architectural gravity rather than decorative filler
  • Private residences — meditation rooms, primary suites, home spas, and minimalist interiors where one grounding image anchors the entire room
  • Galleries and private collections — acquired as an original fine art edition and a standalone sculptural study

"A hotel guest remembers the thread count for a season. They remember the one piece on the wall that made them stop and stay a while longer — that's the job." — Maxwell Alexander

A Living, Expanding Series

Window to the Universe is not a closed collection. New sculptural studies are cast and photographed on an ongoing basis, developed alongside Alexander's parallel work in fine art and hospitality photography. Acquiring a piece from this series means entering an evolving body of work, not a single finished catalog — each new form expands the visual language the last one established.
